Digraphs and Silent 'e'

When some letters come together in words they make a new sound. These groups of letters are called digraphs. 'oa' is a vowel digraph and 'th' is a consonant digraph. Another common change in the sound a letter can make is produced by a silent 'e' at the end of a word. This silent 'e' makes the vowel sound long. For example, the 'a' sound in 'man' is short but when there is an 'e' on the end, making the new word 'mane', the 'a' sound is long. The list of words below includes the more common vowel and consonant digraphs and silent 'e'.
