Phonic Assessment 1

Letter Sounds and Phonically Simple Three-letter Words

One of the skills children need when learning to read is a knowledge of letter sounds and the sounds letters make when they are put together to make letter sequences, for example - oo, oa, ch, th. By the time children transfer to Year 3 they should know all the sounds and letter blends included in these assessment tests.

This assessment test checks how well children know the letter sounds and also tests whether they can put the letter sounds together to make simple three-letter words. There is a box under each letter or word for you to tick or write what your child said if they did not say it correctly. Remember that your child has to say letter sounds not the names of the letters. For example, your child should say 'a' as in 'apple'.

For help with this go to a List of Sounds.
