The first test assesses children's knowledge of letter sounds and their ability to put thse sounds together to make simple three-letter words.

The second test checks how well they can put two consonant sounds together to make a 'consonant blend', ie 'bl' 'st' 'fl'.

The third test checks their knowledge of 'digraphs', ie 'oo' 'sh' 'ch', and 'silent e', ie the change produced by placing the letter 'e' at the end of a word, for example 'fin' and 'fine'.
